Our Pornified Planet

As pornography proliferates in the 21st Century, porn producers reap vast profits while the social costs of this sordid industry become increasingly evident. Just ask the women and children of West Africa.

As reported recently in the online version of the liberal British daily newspaper The Guardian, pornography is ruining lives and threatening the social fabric of countries like Ghana, where Los Angeles-produced porn is viewed on generator-powered televisions in “mud hut” villages. These “impromptu porn cinemas” are leading to chilling episodes of rape and assault as the viewers copy “directly what they see” in the American smut on the screen.

While the article and the BBC documentary series propose that the porn industry take responsibility for these effects by producing more films depicting condom use, any sensible observer must admit that such condom “promotion” is no guard against rape, abuse, or any other aggressive sexual activity fueled by hardcore pornography. Indeed, the true nature of porn is reflected in the violent and exploitative behavior it generates in its viewers the world over.

“The tragic descriptions of what these Ghanaian women and children face is a reminder to all of us that porn is available everywhere in our digital, globalized world,” commented Rick Schatz, president and CEO of the National Coalition. “We all must be vigilant in protecting ourselves, our children, and our communities from its effects.”

The National Coalition is committed to providing families and individuals the tools and information they need to guard their lives and homes from the pernicious nature of pornography. To access National Coalition resources to protect yourself and your family, please click here
