Parents want choice…especially when it comes to television and cable programming. Too often families are confronted with sexually explicit content on television that is inappropriate for adults, let alone children.
To confront this problem, Representative Dan Lipinski (D- Illinois) recently introduced the Family and Consumer Choice Act (H.R. 2738) to help parents better protect their children from objectionable material on TV.
The legislation requires any cable or satellite provider to do one of the following:
- Apply broadcast indecency standards to their programming between 6 AM and 10 PM;
- Allow subscribers to choose a real family tier of programming; a family tier is defined to include all the channels in the Expanded Basic Tier, except those that have programming unsuitable for children between 6 AM and 10 PM; or
- Offer an opt-out a la carte programming option, such that any channel a subscriber does not want to receive will be blocked, with the subscriber receiving a credit on their bill for the blocked channels.
This is great news for anyone concerned about the amount of violence and sexual content on television today. However, if we want to see an effective change in the cable industry, Representatives must hear how important this issue is to us, the consumers of America!
